According to Euromonitor, 60% of Latin Americans look for healthy ingredients when choosing products; the special-purpose food sector grew by 13% between 2018 and 2023

São Paulo, March 2024 – Consumers' pursuit of a healthier lifestyle, which includes paying closer attention to their eating habits, has been driving a transformation in the food and beverage industry. According to Euromonitor research, 60% of Latin Americans now look for healthy ingredients in their food and beverages—and 41% of them carefully read the nutritional values of what they consume.

These efforts include adopting a more nutrient-rich diet, high-protein or plant-based products, as well as dietary supplements and items with functional properties – that is, those capable of contributing to increased immunity, cardiovascular and digestive health.

Consumer demand also fuels industry growth. According to data from Abiad (Brazilian Association of the Special Purpose Food and Related Products Industry), between 2018 and 2023, the special purpose food sector grew by 13%.

“We closely monitor the development of the ingredients sector, and over the last few years, the growth of innovative solutions to meet consumer demand for products that are healthier, but that maintain the indulgence associated with life’s pleasurable moments, has been notable,” says Adriano Pegorelli, co-founder of NIS – Nutri Ingredients Summit. “This naturally boosts the activities of these suppliers and end-product manufacturers.”

The event, which will reach its fourth edition in 2024, will be held on April 23rd and 24th at the Transamérica Expo Center in São Paulo. Connecting suppliers of functional ingredients to the food, beverage, dietary supplement, and pharmaceutical industries, NIS is a comprehensive showcase for this expansion.

In 2023, it brought together approximately 50 exhibitors—representatives of over 200 ingredient brands. This year, organizers' expectations have already been exceeded: the number of exhibiting companies grew by 50%—resulting in the largest edition in NIS history, which expects to welcome over 4,000 industry professionals this year.

"Brazilian consumers are increasingly aware of the importance of a healthy and balanced diet. Our research revealed that 871% of Brazilian consumers believe that maintaining a healthy diet means balancing healthier options with more indulgent ones," says Fabiana Vancetto, director of Mintel, a market intelligence agency and strategic partner of the NIS.

NIS is a complete platform, which includes a trade fair, conference, multisensory experiences and awards.

"The event works perfectly as a platform to communicate the latest developments in science, health, and nutrition to the food and beverage industry," says Camilo Guerrero, Marketing Manager at dsm-firmenich. The company, a digital sponsor of the event, will host a sensory experience at NIS Taste Live, exploring how to develop indulgent and healthy products.

Visitors to the NIS will also be able to meet and reconnect with national and international manufacturers and distributors of natural, functional, and nutraceutical ingredients, vitamins, fat, sugar, and sodium substitutes, colors, extracts, and natural flavors. They will also be able to see new products in the areas of dairy proteins, fibers, texturizers, antioxidants, probiotics, prebiotics, enzymes, collagen, amino acids, vegetable proteins, and plant-based products, among many others.

"NIS has become the leading and most comprehensive event for functional ingredients, focusing on innovation, health, product launches, audience development, and business generation. And the 2024 edition will be historic, with rich content, new speakers, new exhibitors, and new sensory experiences for visitors," says Cassiano Facchinetti, co-founder of NIS.

The event is organized by NIS Live – a joint venture between GMF: Global Marketing Fairs, nggulo Comunicação Estratégica, and Facchinetti Exhibitions & Consultancy. Registration for the fair is free until April 20th.
