In recent years, consumers have shown a growing interest in supporting their physical and mental health. In this context, prebiotics such as chicory root fibers are emerging as versatile solutions to meet consumer demands. These fibers promote the growth of bifidobacteria, improving overall health and well-being. The continued evolution of the prebiotics market promises to transform food product development, meeting growing expectations for optimized health.

Understanding Consumer Insights

In recent years, consumers have shown a strong interest in supporting their physical and mental health, with a particular focus on digestive health. Research conducted by BENEO in 2022 and 2023 reveals a strong connection between digestive health and various aspects of well-being, including physical well-being, weight management, physical appearance, healthy aging, feelings of vitality, immune health, and mental well-being. Notably, consumers worldwide recognize the importance of the gut microbiome for overall health, with a high level of interest reported in the Americas (50%). Meeting these consumer expectations becomes crucial for product developers in the food, beverage, and supplement industry.

Prebiotics as an Ideal Solution

Prebiotics, particularly prebiotic fibers, are emerging as a unique and versatile solution to meet consumer demands for digestive health and gut microbiome support. Plant-based prebiotics stand out as the preferred nutrients for beneficial bacteria in the gut. Prebiotic fibers such as inulin and oligofructose selectively support the growth of bifidobacteria, contributing to improved bowel function and regularity, and stool softening. Research using quality-of-life questionnaires shows that regular bowel function positively affects satisfaction and comfort levels, supporting overall well-being.

Digestive Health: The Star in the Wellness Market

In recent years, the focus on digestive health has highlighted the importance of prebiotic ingredients in supporting overall well-being. While the market seeks to offer products claiming to improve gut health, the importance of substantiating such claims through high-quality human studies cannot be overstated. Scientific evidence plays a key role in proving the ingredient's effectiveness and demonstrating the benefits of prebiotics.

The Need for Robust Scientific Evidence

Scientific studies form the basis upon which the efficacy of prebiotic ingredients is established. Rigorous human trials, employing meticulous methodology and design, such as randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled trials, are essential to demonstrate the impact of these ingredients on digestive health and other aspects of health, including immune health and mood. Researchers can isolate and measure the specific effects of prebiotics, ensuring that the observed benefits are indeed attributed to the ingredient in question. These studies adhere to rigorous standards, covering factors such as sample size, study duration, and participant demographics, providing robust evidence demonstrating the ingredient's effectiveness in supporting the benefit.

Obtaining Regulatory Approval

The path to approval for health claims requires an adequate amount of scientific evidence supporting the claimed benefits of prebiotic ingredients. Regulatory bodies such as the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Brazil's National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) require a robust evidence base before endorsing health claims. This rigorous evaluation ensures that consumers can trust the accuracy of product labels and make informed decisions about their dietary choices.

The Solution Comes from Prebiotics, Indeed

Fortunately, the prebiotic market boasts ingredient solutions backed by rigorous science and high-quality data that meet the requirements of health authorities. Throughout the evolution of prebiotics, and for more than two decades, fibers such as inulin and oligofructose, for example, have contributed to a compelling body of evidence, facilitating a smoother path to regulatory approval. In addition to receiving a positive evaluation by the EFSA and approval in the European Union, these ingredients have also been recognized as proven prebiotics by ISAPP (International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics), thanks to well-designed studies with reliable results proving their health benefits.

Beyond Digestive Health

Proven prebiotics contribute to a healthier gut ecosystem by supporting the gut microbiota and providing additional benefits. They can positively influence internal defense mechanisms, strengthen the barrier function of the intestinal cell wall, promote a more acidic gut environment for better mineral absorption, and aid in weight management through gut hormones that increase satiety.

As the food and beverage industry continues to evolve, meeting consumer expectations for overall health and well-being becomes essential. Based on ongoing research, incorporating prebiotic fibers into product development promises to revolutionize the way we approach gut-friendly foods, leading to healthier and happier consumers.
