Dietary supplementation: what it is and when it should be practiced

To share

We know that miracles don't exist and that, to have a conditioned body, the way is through dietary discipline and a good dose of physical exercise.

For the Federal Nutrition Council, nutritional supplements are foods that serve to complement the daily diet of a healthy person with calories and/or nutrients, when their intake from food is insufficient or the diet requires supplementation.

But what is the role of dietary supplements?

They can be quite effective and help speed up the body's metabolism, which enhances the weight loss process. But enjoy them in moderation: excessive consumption can lead to serious illnesses," explains nutritionist Camila Garcia, from the Preventive Nutrition team at Hospital do Coração in São Paulo.

When to use?

Let's look at some examples of situations where supplements, supplements or doses of vitamins are indicated:

  •  Individuals who engage in intense and frequent physical activity should take supplemental doses of vitamin C and B vitamins.
  •  Women who intend to become pregnant should take supplemental doses of folic acid beforehand to avoid anemia during pregnancy.
  •  Strict vegetarians should take supplemental doses of vitamin B12 to avoid long-term deficiency of this nutrient.
  •  Women entering menopause should take supplemental doses of calcium and vitamin D to reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

But here's a tip: always consult your doctor or nutritionist before using any supplement!
